The Road To Recovery is a toolkit developed by the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCCTS) and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) Trauma and IDD expert panel. According to the developers, this training is intended to teach basic knowledge, skills, and values about working with children with IDD who have had traumatic experiences, and how to use this knowledge to support children’s safety, well-being, happiness, and recovery through trauma informed practice. Participants will develop skills to assist with utilizing an IDD and trauma-informed child-centered approach to support both the child and the family in recovering from traumatic experiences. The role of protective factors in enhancing family well-being and resilience, as well as how to provide practical tools to caregivers and parents will also be covered.
The training is for a wide range of providers, including administrators, clinicians, case managers, child advocates, teachers, and other professionals working with children with Intellectual developmental disabilities. mental health providers, targeted case managers, medical professionals, and DCBS and CPS workers. The program will provide information on the unique challenges facing immigrants, the impact of potentially traumatic events in their lives, and provide opportunities to enhance one’s ability to help.
